Food is a popular gift in return for hometown tax donations. Seafood, meat, and fruit are especially popular.
I have also received Shine Muscat grapes and crabs as gifts in return.
I won’t go into the details of how hometown tax donations work here, but I’ll give a simple explanation for those who don’t know much about it.

It's a system that everyone involved is happy with.
Some people mistakenly believe that because it has the word "hometown" in the name, you can only donate to your place of birth, but this is not the case; you can donate to local governments all over Japan.
The system was originally established to distribute taxes concentrated in urban areas to depopulated regions where tax revenues are declining. So, for example, you can choose a local government based on a reason such as "I visited there previously as a tourist and loved it," or "It's the hometown of my favorite sports team," or you can choose a local government that is offering a gift that you want!
